Why do newborn babies get jaundice?

JAUNDICE:

Our red blood cells can normally live upto 120 days. Once it gets old, it may be broken down into several components. One of them is bilurubin. Bilurubin is a yellowish colored waste component. It is normally broken down by liver. Now, in case of new born babies, the liver is not so much developed and hence it can't effectively break bilurubin. As a result the bilurubin content increases and it multiplies within their body and causes yellowish color in their skin and white region of their eyes and thus causing jaundice. Sometimes these may disappear as the baby starts to grow. However if it doesn't disappear, we have to consult a doctor immediately.
