Why Cavities are formed?

Normally, our teeth and tongue and consists of large number of bacteria and other micro organisms which are harmless. A tooth consists of

  • Enamel
  • Dentin
  • Pulp
Enamel is the outer layer and is mostly made up of minerals. Dentine is the layer underlying below the enamel. Pulp has blood vessels and nerves. Now, when we eat food containing sugars, some of these bacteria may feed in sugars and produce acid. This acid starts to dissolve the minerals of the tooth enamel, causing tooth decay. Usually, our saliva restores these minerals in the enamel and thus preventing  further decay. But, if we continuously eating sugary foods, then our saliva does not keep up, causing the bacteria to pass into the dentine and then eventually into the pulp and thus creating a cavity.
